Improving Access to Behavioral Health Services

An Eastern state needed better data on who was accessing behavioral health services like counseling and hospitalization, and how much was being spent. Optum created a dashboard to leverage the state's data warehouse to track utilization and demographics.

The dashboard provides trends and breakdowns of members receiving services by locality, age, gender, ethnicity and race. It can filter by claim type, diagnosis and more.

This data helps the state:

  • Monitor and improve behavioral health offerings
  • Inform funding decisions by the legislature
  • Allow providers to improve services

The dashboard is a valuable asset enabling analysts, policymakers, and providers to enhance behavioral health services in the state. Given its success, they are expanding it to include addiction and recovery services.
